Oboe Lessons

Oboe lessons in Maastricht and online

Hello there! I'm Lilian, and I'm here to share my love for the oboe with learners of all ages above 13. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, I've got your back.

I'm proud to be part of the KUMA Music School family, located in Maastricht in the Centre Ceramique (www.kumamuziekschool.nl).

Life can get hectic, so I'm all about flexibility. While my regular teaching day at Centre Ceramique is Friday, we can find a time during the week that works for both of us, and we'll make sure our lessons fit seamlessly into your schedule. Reach out to me, and we can chat about when can your lesson take place and tailor a learning plan that suits you.

You can also ask for a try-out lesson or attend one of KUMA's Open Days free of cost. Next Open Day 18/01/2025 in Centre Ceramique, Maastricht, Netherlands.

Who am I as an Oboe Teacher?

I hold a Master's degree in Music performance and I have extensive experience in both performance and education. Currently, I'm also a Lecturer at Conservatorium van Maastricht. I’ve been fortunate to study with some of the world’s greatest oboists, and I feel a strong sense of duty to pass on their wisdom, knowledge, and love for the craft.

My expertise lies in teaching beginner and intermediate oboe players, both amateurs and those with professional aspirations. I am truly passionate about guiding musicians on their journey to becoming proficient in playing the oboe.

I design personalized practice plans for every student, helping you overcome specific challenges without spending years working through entire method books. My approach is centered on deliberate practice — a scientifically proven way to achieve meaningful progress by focusing on small, manageable challenges rather than overwhelming lists of issues.

My teaching philosophy is centered on empowering my students by equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed on their own. Your independence and self-motivation are encouraged, as I believe these are essential qualities for lifelong learning.

Oboe Lesson Format

Each lesson lasts one hour and is thoughtfully divided between technical exercises and repertoire tailored to your goals. You can choose to focus on etudes, classical or even modern pieces.

Lessons are flexible to suit your schedule, whether you prefer weekly lessons or sessions every 2-3 weeks. The key is finding a rhythm that works with how much time you can dedicate to playing the oboe each week. While many of my most committed students opt for weekly lessons, I understand that life gets busy. The good news is that progress is still possible, even with less frequent lessons!

To support your goals, I offer lesson packages of 5 or 10 sessions, providing a structured yet adaptable approach to your learning. And if you’re looking for a one-time lesson to focus on a specific challenge or simply explore oboe playing, you’re more than welcome to join for a single session!

Together, we can create a tailored learning plan that suits your needs and aspirations.

Who are my students?

My students are passionate individuals aged 13 and above who are eager to learn or reconnect with the oboe. Whether you:

  • Played in the past and want to rediscover your love for the instrument,

  • Are curious about the oboe and want to give it a try,

  • Already play in an amateur Harmonie Orchestra or Symphony Orchestra and want to refine your skills, or

  • Aspire to join such an ensemble,

  • Want to prepare for the entrance exam of a Conservatorium.

I’m here to help you on your musical journey. Together, we’ll address common challenges like: properly hitting high notes, improving endurance, stabilizing your tone, refining your breathing technique and embouchure, so you can enjoy the experience of playing oboe to its fullest.
